This sprightly 83-year-old has achieved not one, but three, careers, and at an impressive level. He has acted alongside Larry Hagman and Sean Connery, he has danced professionally and you would instantly recognise one of his eclectic designs or paintings because they have been sold all over the world as prints and posters. You would think it was time to slow down, but as long as his hand can pick up a brush and as long as his eyes can see the canvas or paper in front of him, Alex will continue tapping into his creative energy tank, which appears to be never-ending. Alex has led a remarkable life. Born in Smolensk and brought up on a kolhoz (collective farm), he spent many years in concentration camps across Europe. His mother, a Second World War refugee, was a dancer and used to entertain the British troops in a refugee camp. Alex came to England in 1947 with his mother when she was offered the job of cook and housekeeper in a stately home. A student at Somerset College of Art in Taunton, Alex trained as an illustrator and designer and has produced book jackets for the likes of Collins and Corgi, as well as numerous record covers for Pan Records, EMI and Decca. His copywriter happened to be Roger Hargreaves, of Mr Men fame, and his account executive (who took ideas to clients) was David Puttnam, now Lord Puttnam.
